Our next book club will be at Peggy’s house, 20 Jubilee, on March 4, 2020 at 7:00pm.
Bring a snack or drink to share and come to enjoy lively and friendly discussions about books.

We have a choice of 2 books this time:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: The book is about Henrietta Lacks and the immortal cell line, known as HeLa, that came from Lacks’s cervical cancer cells in 1951. Skloot became interested in Lacks after a biology teacher referenced her, but didn’t know much about her.

The German Midwife: Germany, 1944. A prisoner in the camps, Anke Hoff is doing what she can to keep her pregnant campmates and their newborns alive. But when Anke’s work is noticed, she is chosen for a task more dangerous than she could ever have imagined. Eva Braun is pregnant with the Führer’s child, and Anke is assigned as her midwife. Before long, Anke is faced with an impossible choice. Does she serve the Reich she loathes and keep the baby alive? Or does she sacrifice an innocent child for the good of a broken world?

The next JARA book club will be at Portia’s house on April 28th at 7:00. It is a little further this time around in order to accommodate for all of the book club members who are involved in the Aylmer Community Theatre production on Blithe Spirit – hope to see you there on April 16th, 17th or 18th (shameless plug!).

Our next book is Where’d you go, Bernadette by Maria Semple.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a 2012 comedy novel written by Maria Semple. The plot revolves around an agoraphobic architect and mother named Bernadette Fox, who goes missing prior to a family trip to Antarctica. It is narrated by her 15-year-old daughter Bee Branch. It is told in a series of documents (emails, memos, transcripts, etc.) with the occasional interlude by Bee.

We wanted to choose something lighter this time around…and this seemed to fit the bill. It’s also a movie if anyone isn’t interested in reading it 🙂

Thanks, and see you on the 28th…
